Cover Honors Founding Father Gouverneur Morris

Own this cover picturing Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816).  The Flag over Independence Hall stamp is tied to the cover with a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, postmark.  Morris moved to this city in 1779.  The January 31 date marked the 256th anniversary of his birth.

Morris served in the Continental Congress as a delegate from New York.  When he wasn’t re-elected, he moved to Philadelphia, where he opened a law practice.  Morris became a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, representing Pennsylvania.  He is credited with writing the Preamble to the Constitution and was responsible for much of the rest of the document.
