Cover Honors Founding Father George Read

Own this cover picturing George Read (1733-1798).  The 15-Star Fort McHenry Flag stamp is tied to the cover with a New Castle, Deleware, postmark.  Read spent most of his life in that area.  The date on the postmark represents the 245th anniversary of his birth.

Read established a law firm in New Castle in 1754.  He served in the Continental Congress beginning in 1774 and was one of the few delegates to favor maintaining the colonies' relationship with Great Britain.  By the time the Declaration of Independence was completed, Read saw there was no possibility of reconciling with Britain and signed the document.  He later served on Delaware's Constitutional committee and helped draft the new state's constitution.
