 Cover Honors Founding Father William Livingston

Own this cover picturing William Livingston (1723-1790).  The 15-Star Fort McHenry Flag stamp is tied to the cover with a Elizabeth, New Jersey, postmark.  In 1772, Livingston moved to the city, called Elizabethtown at the time.  The date on the postmark represents the 255th anniversary of his birth.

Livingston was born in Albany, New York, to the prominent Livingston family.  He graduated from Yale College then studied law in New York City.  In 1772, he moved to New Jersey.  He was appointed to represent the colony in the Cotniental Congress.  Four years later, he was elected governor of New Jersey.  In 1787, Livingston was chosen as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.  He continued as New Jersey's governor until his death.
