Space Fantasy Stamps Capture Classic Science Fiction Style
Each of these mint se-tenants features space fantasy scenes that stretch across multiple stamps. They’re inspired by the visions of space made popular in movies and comic books of the past.
Although the 1993 Space Fantasy stamps weren’t the first US stamps to depict imaginary scenes, they were the first to provide a panoramic view of the future. The artist who created the stamps studied Buck Rogers stories from the 1920s, as well as 1950s comic books to aid his creativity.
The Space Discovery stamps picture an artist's conception of what it would be like to live on another planet. Designed by Attila Hejja, these stamps show an outer space world that is quite different from Earth.
Since 1957, soon after the launching of the first artificial satellite, the United Nations has worked to ensure that space is used for peaceful purposes and that the benefits from space activities are shared by all nations. The United Nations and other space organizations designated 1992 as International Space Year (ISY). With the growing realization that there was a lack of data, knowledge, and understanding of what was happening to our fragile Earth, Mission to Planet Earth was been given primary importance on the world’s environmental-science agenda.
