Ten years after Princess Diana’s untimely death, emotions still ran high for her friends, family, and millions of admirers. The Royal Family held a memorial service for the Princess on August 31, 2007, to honor her passing. The event was held at Kensington Palace, her last home, with 500 selected guests.
Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry, organized the memorial. Both of them gave eulogies about their mother. Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Diana’s older sister, also spoke.
“She will always be remembered for her amazing public work. But behind the media glare, to us, just two loving children, she was quite simply the best mother in the world,” Harry said.
The service was broadcast live across the world from the Guard’s Chapel at Kensington. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Phillip, were in attendance. Prince Charles also was there, along with other members of the Royal Family. Other notable guests included British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and John Major. Sir Elton John was also present, although he did not perform.
Diana’s many fans gave their own tributes – flowers were hung over the palace fences and gates, and even formed a carpet. Photos and poems also covered the fences. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, said two prayers for Diana and thanked her for her “willingness to reach out to the excluded and forgotten.”
The hymn “I Vow to Thee, My Country” was sung for the finale. William and Harry made sure it was included, as it was Diana’s favorite hymn. It had also been sung at her wedding and funeral. The entire Royal Family joined in singing the hymn.
