10¢ green Washington Type II single used on First Day of 10c Rate From California.  1857, 10¢ green, type II (No. 32), position 60R1, deep early color, tied by "San Francisco Cal Sep 5 1857" c.d.s. on Denver correspondence cover to Washington, D.C., clean and Very Fine. 

Notes on Expertization – signed by Ashbrook with provenance Kramer.  Reverse with Ashbrook's note, "From San Francisco Sep 5 1857, this is a First Day Use of 10¢ perforated stamp from California - Stanley B. Ashbrook."  There was an off-cover pair of the 1857 10¢ green, type II with a July dated c.d.s. strike from the Fisher collection that is the earliest known usage.
