This cover was mailed from New York City on June 16, 1860, was processed through London on June 27, and finally arrived in Amsterdam on June 29. The cover bears a postmark from each of these locations as well as a handwritten note on the front that reads "per SS Vanderbilt." This refers to the largest ocean steamship owned by the famous Cornelius Vanderbilt himself. The Vanderbilt was part of a greater fleet of ships run by the successful businessman before the Civil War. When the war began just one year after this cover was sent, Vanderbilt donated his namesake ship to the Union army. It's interesting to note that this cover was bound for Amsterdam, as that the Netherlands was the same country Vanderbilt's family originally came from.
The stamps on this historic US cover totaled 21¢, worth over $43.00 today.
