Complete Set of 1935 Mozambique Co. Airmail Stamps
First airmails issued by the chartered company
In the late 19th century Mozambique was claimed by Portugal, which assigned parts of the country to private companies. The Mozambique Company was given one of the largest pieces of land to administer from 1892 to 1942.
In 1935, the company created 15 bi-color Airmail stamps featuring the Armstrong-Whitworth Atalanta, the plane that flew the first Airmail flights in Mozambique. The Atalanta is pictured flying over Beira, the Mozambique Company's headquarters during its administration, and the country's fourth largest city.
