CZ128 – Canal Channel – Before
This stamp was issued on August 15, 1939, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. The series contains eight scenes before and after the canal was completed.
The stamp pictures two steam shovels meeting at the bottom of Gaillard Cut. Four months later, water began to flow in the canal.
The 11¢ stamp had no specific use, but was usually used in combination with other stamps to make a rate. Only 34,010 of this denomination were sold. The rest were destroyed in 1941.
