Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson, near Los Angeles, California, on June 1, 1926. She spent most of her childhood in orphanages and foster homes. When Norma Jean was sixteen, an Army publicist photographed her working in the Radioplane Munitions Factory, marking the beginning of her modeling career. He hoped her image would serve as an inspiration to the troops. By 1946, Norma Jean had appeared on a number of magazine covers and was offered a one-year contract by 20th Century Fox, paying $125 a week.
