William and Kate Wedding Souvenir Sheet

This souvenir sheet from Guernsey pictures Prince William and Catherine Middleton at their wedding.

Days before the April 29, 2011 wedding, people began camping in the streets along the wedding route and near the major sites of the day. The night before the wedding, William stopped and spoke to some of the excited crowds.

By early morning, crowds lined the streets while millions more sat anxiously in front of their televisions on the public holiday. Among the guests were soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, as well as Sir Elton John, a guest at Diana’s wedding.

The ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. Kate wowed everyone with a sleek Alexander McQueen dress designed by famed British designer Sarah Burton. The identity of the designer was kept a secret until Kate arrived at Westminster Abbey. The satin dress was topped with delicate lace roses, thistles, daffodils, and shamrocks crafted in the traditional Carrickmacross technique.

When Kate arrived at the altar, William lovingly whispered, “You look beautiful.” Two choirs, an orchestra, and a fanfare ensemble accompanied the traditional British ceremony. The sermon ended with a prayer composed by the happy couple. While William did not receive a ring, he gave Kate one made from Welsh gold.

After the newly named Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left the church, they went to a lunchtime reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen. Here, they shared the traditional balcony kiss as members of William’s Search and Rescue Force flew overhead. This was followed by a dinner hosted by Prince Charles and a late-night dance party.
