Harry S. Truman – Assumed the presidency in April 1945 after Roosevelt’s death. Germany surrendered on his 61st birthday and he approved the use of atomic bombs on Japan to prevent the larger loss of life that was predicted if fighting were to continue.

He went on to lead the British Eighth Army in the Invasion of Sicily and Italy and commanded all Allied ground troops during the invasion of Normandy.
