Yang Liwei was the first person sent into space by the Chinese space program. He traveled aboard the Shenzhou 5 in 2003, making China the third country to independently send humans into space.
Mugunghwa-5 was Korea’s first communications satellite, launched in 2006.
Yi So-Yeon became the first Korean to fly in space in 2008 aboard the Soyuz TMA-12. While in space she conducted 18 science experiments, including monitoring how changes in gravity affected fruit flies and the growth of plants in space.
Koichi Wakata flew four NASA Space Shuttle missions, a Russian Soyuz mission, and made a long-duration stay on the International Space Station. In his nearly 20-year career, he spent more than 11 months in space. He was also the first Japanese commander of the International Space Station.
Fei Junlong was part of China’s second mission of the Shenzhou program, Shenzhou 6 in 2005.
Soichi Noguchi was the fifth Japanese astronaut in space and the fourth on the space shuttle. He participated in NASA’s first “return to flight” mission after the Columbia disaster as well as on the Soyuz TMA-17 mission and Expedition 22 to the International Space Station.
