Issued in 2015, this neat mint souvenir sheet honors two major Soviet space race milestones – the first satellite and the first man in space.
The stamp pictures the Sputnik I satellite. Sputnik I became the first man-made object in space on October 4, 1957. It was about the size of a beach ball and had four flimsy metal antennae that resembled whiskers trailing behind it as it flew overhead. The stamp also pictures Sergei Korolev, a rocket engineer who worked on Sputnik I and was also involved with sending the first animal (Laika the dog) and the first human into space.
The sheet’s selvage pictures the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. On April 12, 1961, at 9:07 a.m., Gagarin entered earth’s orbit and made history. The flight took just 108 minutes. Upon returning to Earth he received the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, the highest honor that country bestows.
