Switzerland collection includes more than 350 mint and postally used stamps beginning with the seldom-seen #8 issued in 1850.  Nice representation of the 1800s with over 40 pre-1900 Definitives.  Some Semi-postals, Airmail and Officials throughout.  Neat collection.

Switzerland is the most mountainous country in Europe, with the Jura Mountains to the northwest and the Alps to the south.  With little arable soil for agriculture, farmers have had to rely on small dairy herds.  But they have turned their limited milk production into world-famous cheeses and chocolate.  Industry and manufacturing are also major aspects of the economy, even though resources are so limited.  Swiss watches and tools are some of the highest quality in the world.

Landlocked in the center of Western Europe, the country is bordered by France, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Italy.  For centuries, in the midst of these giant powers, Switzerland has been training some of the best soldiers in the world.  In the past, the training and skill of the Swiss military was so highly respected that Swiss soldiers were hired as mercenaries by many other governments.  Even today, a contingent of the Swiss Guard posts a ceremonial defense for the Vatican in Rome.  In contrast, Switzerland has remained staunchly neutral in world conflicts, and has become a haven for political refugees and a base for world peace organizations.

Switzerland also has an outstanding educational system with nine years of mandatory attendance.  This has helped raise the literacy rate to 99%.
