Mickey Versus the Phantom Blot
Issued in 1998, this fun Central Africa souvenir sheet was issued to honor famed Mickey comic strip artist Floyd Gottfredson. Gottfredson was brought in as a short-term replacement on the Mickey daily comic strip in 1930, but would go on to illustrate the strip for 45 years.
This neat souvenir sheet pictures Mickeys and his nemesis, the Phantom Blot. Created by Gottfredson, the Blot first appeared in comics in 1939. In many of his early appearances, he only stole certain cameras and destroyed them. In later stories, he served as the mastermind behind larger gangs.
This souvenir sheet also commemorates Mickey's 70th birthday. Since his debut in the short film Steamboat Willie in 1928, Mickey has become one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in the world.
