More About Micronesia...

Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania that includes thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean.  It has shared cultural history with the Philippines to the west, Polynesia to the east, and Melanesia to the south, as well as with the general community of Austronesia.  Micronesia includes the Caroline islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Mariana Islands, and the Marshall Islands, as well as many other islands scattered throughout the region.

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are located within the Caroline Islands and include over 600 islands.  The first postage stamps were stamps of Germany for the Caroline Islands.  Then, from 1914 to 1946, Japan stamps were used.  When the region became part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific after World War II, American stamps were used from 1946 until Micronesia gained independence.  The first stamps of independent Micronesia were issued in 1984.  The FSM continues to have a special relationship with the United States today, with the US Postal Service transporting mail between the constituent states of the FSM and between the United States and the FSM.  The FSM is also part of the United States ZIP code system, with the same postal rates charged.  What an interesting shared history!
