More About Algeria...

Algeria (the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria) is located in the Maghreb region of North Africa.  It's the largest country in Africa and is bordered to the northeast by Tunisia, to the east by Libya, to the southeast by Niger, to the southwest by Mali, Mauritania, and Western Sahara, to the west by Morocco, and to the north by the Mediterranean Sea.

Algeria's first postage stamps were stamps of France and were first used January 1, 1849.  In 1924, these stamps began being overprinted "ALGÉRIE," with the first stamps designated for Algeria finally issued in 1926.  Algeria went back to using stamps of France from 1958 to 1962 when it gained independence and began issuing its own stamps again.  To discover more postal history of Algeria, click here.
