UN1048 – Conference on Sustainable Development
Offices in New York
From June 20 to 22, 2012, the United Nations held its Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro. Also called Rio+20 and Earth Summit 20, it marked the 29th anniversary of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development and the 10th Anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.
The main objectives of the conference were “to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development; to assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development; and to address new and emerging challenges.” The two major themes of the meeting were “A green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication” and “an institutional framework for sustainable development.”
