The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps were issued to commemorate the London 2012 Paralympic Games.  These games are held every four years, like the Olympic Games to promote “peace, mutual understanding, and goodwill” – similar goals shared by the United Nations.  The London 2012 Paralympic Games were the largest to date, with 4,302 athletes from 164 nations competing in 503 events in 20 sports.

The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps launch event was held at the Vienna International Centre.  Among the events of the day was a table tennis exhibition between members of the Austrian Paralympic Team and the U.N. table tennis club.

The stamps issued by the New York office picture goalball and sitting volleyball.  Played competitively in over 100 countries, goalball is one of the most popular Paralympic sports.  It was first created as a rehabilitation sport for injured World War II soldiers.  Sitting volleyball has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1980.  A women’s event was added to the program in 2004.
