This is the eighth group of sixteen flag stamps honoring member states of the United Nations. Issued in 1987, the first eight are Comoros, Democratic Yemen, Mongolia, Vanuatu, Japan, Gabon, Zimbabwe, and Iraq.
Comoros is an island in the Indian Ocean, consisting of four main islands along with a few smaller ones. The green flag with a white crescent moon is typically symbolic of an Islamic nation. Each of the four main islands which make up the country is honored with a star.
Vanuatu is an island country in the Southwest Pacific. Formerly the New Hebrides, governed jointly by France and Great Britain, it became the independent nation of Vanuatu in 1980. Its flag is quite unique. The red circle on the flag of Japan represents the sun. In Japanese, Japan is called “Nippon,” which means “source of the sun.”
