The United Nations Volunteer program (U.N.V.) was established in 1971 for the purpose of directing professional men and women, on a volunteer basis, into development- assistance activities. At its 40th anniversary session, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution that International Volunteer Day would be celebrated annually on December 5th. The volunteer’s unique contribution lies in their ability to share skills at the working level. They must be willing to adapt their abilities to circumstances and needs and to work against and surmount the job’s inherent difficulties and frustrations.
