2001 World Heritage
Japan
Japan is among the U.N. nations that have agreed to identify, protect, and preserve important natural and cultural sites that are recognized to be of exceptional interest and universal value. This is the purpose of the World Heritage Convention, adopted by UNESCO in 1972. Six sites in Japan are featured on these stamps.

The beautiful gardens and wooden architecture of Kyoto are celebrated on the 34¢ stamp. Kyoto was the seat of Japan’s imperial court for over one thousand years.

The architectural style known as “Gassho” is seen on the 70¢ stamp. These large houses, with steeply sloped, thatched roofs, were designed to withstand the excessive snow build-up that occurs in the mountain region of the villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama.
