2002 World Heritage
The wealth and diversity of Earth’s cultural and natural heritage is celebrated on the U.N. World Heritage stamps. In 1978, Italy ratified the World Heritage Convention adopted by UNESCO in 1972. As of December 2001, 35 sites in Italy had been included on the World Heritage List. Six of these are on the 2002 World Heritage/Italy issues.
The 37¢ stamp features the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, begun in 1296. Florence was a center of the Renaissance and came into economic and cultural predominance under the Medici in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
