Coin and Flag

A new UNPA series began with this issue.  Twenty-four member countries will be featured each year until all 192 nations have been represented.  The series is expected to run for approximately eight years.

From 1980 to 1989, the UNPA issued stamps of flags of the 160 nations who were United Nations members at that time.  Sixteen countries’ flags were featured each year.

Featured on the first set in the Coin and Flag Series from the Offices in New York are the Chinese flag and 1 yuan, the Australian flag and 1 dollar, the Russian Federation flag and 1 ruble, the Mexican flag and 10 pesos, the Ghanan flag and 50 cedis, the Israeli flag and 10 agorot, the Japanese flag and 10 yen.

The Australian flag contains the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain.  The large star beneath the Union Jack is Australia’s Commonwealth star.  The stellar formation on the right is the Southern Cross, representing Australia’s position in the Southern Hemisphere.
