The stamps in this issue were adopted by Rocco J. Callari of the United States, from a portrait by Harald Dal of Norway.  Trygve Lie, the first Secretary-General of the United Nations, was born in Oslo in 1896.  He graduated from Oslo University Law School and became a leading party lawyer and politician in Norway.  In January 1946, he headed the Norwegian delegation to the first meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in London.  He was elected Secretary-General for a five-year term.  In 1950, a three-year extension of his term was voted.  In 1954, he wrote “In the Cause of Peace: Seven Years with the United Nations.”  Trygve Lie died in 1968.
