1998 50 Years of
United Nations Peacekeeping
UN Offices in Geneva
For a half century the United Nations has acted as the chief peacekeeping organization between countries. In the beginning, it was the U.N.’s primary goal to ensure peace between two nations that had agreed to a truce, before a negotiated settlement could be reached.
When a peacekeeping mission is deployed, a peacekeeping force is sent to the area for a predetermined amount of time. This time is relative based on the mission and could last only days or go on for several decades.
These stamps pay tribute to the quarter of a million peacekeepers who have served and the 1,500 who have given their lives while trying to prevent and resolve conflict in the world.
