1999 World Heritage
Australia
The World Heritage Convention was created in 1972 to preserve the world’s natural and cultural sites and monuments. Nations that ratify the convention are committed to identifying, protecting, conserving, and presenting to the public the cultural and natural heritage within their territories.

There are 12 such sites identified in Australia – six of them featured on these stamps. Interestingly, four of the sites are on the list for both cultural and natural reasons: Willandra Lakes Region, Kakadu National Park, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and the Tasmanian Wilderness. The other two sites, Wet Tropics of the Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, meet the criteria for natural listings.
