The world’s leading climatologists have agreed that climate change is occurring, with human activity as a major cause. Industrialized nations are the largest contributors to this “greenhouse effect,” producing gases that affect earth’s atmosphere and alter the climate. Unless the resulting global warming is controlled, the earth can look forward to melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, extreme weather phenomena, and a generally warmer and wetter world.
In 1992, the world community met to address the problem of greenhouse gas emissions. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol grew out of that meeting. When put into effect, the Protocol will commit developed countries to reduce their emissions significantly. Hundreds of technologies and practices exist, “green technology,” that can provide solutions to global warming.
