The Dag Hammarskjöld stamp commemorates the second secretary-general of the United Nations.  He was unanimously appointed to the office in 1953 and unanimously re-elected for an additional five-year term in 1957.  September 18, 2001, marks the 40th anniversary of his death in a plane crash – while on a peace mission to the Congo.  Hammarskjöld was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, posthumously, in 1961.
