Ralph Johnson Bunche (1903-71) was the first person of color to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.  He won the honor in 1950 for negotiating an armistice in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.  Bunche worked actively, as an American citizen and as U.N. Under-Secretary-General, for race relations, human rights, decolonization, and international peace keeping.
