Over a million people around the world lose their lives to traffic accidents, with hundreds of thousands more becoming injured.  Most of these injuries are among pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and public transportation passengers, rather than private auto occupants.

In 2003, the United Nations recognized that road traffic injuries had become a global public health crisis.  The World Health Organization designated Road Safety to be the theme for World Heath Day 2004.  

The U.N. stamps issued in response to this problem emphasize the need for drivers to be alert and sober, to obey driving regulations, and to observe safety precautions.
