The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program Fact Sheet
Program Background
The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program was a one-year initiative to honor
the District of Columbia and the five U.S. Territories
Under this program, the reverse design of the quarter-dollar changed six times in 2009.
The coins were issued in equal sequential intervals for that one year.
The quarters were released in the following order:
The District of Columbia
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
Guam
American Samoa
The United States Virgin Islands
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
This program immediately followed the 50 State Quarters® Program, which ended in 2008.
The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters are legal tender coinage, issued by the
United States Mint, and are available in circulation.
Design
The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program designs are displayed on the reverse
(tails) of the quarters, while the obverse (heads) of the quarters will continue to bear the familiar image of
George Washington.
The designs were developed through a consultative process involving the chief executive of the District of
Columbia and each territory, and the Commission of Fine Arts, and were selected after review by the
Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
The Secretary of the Treasury selected all final designs.
