History of Aden Postage Stamps

Aden is a port city in present-day Yemen.  In the 1800s, it was a popular exchange port for mail traveling between the Indian Ocean and Europe.  From 1854 to 1937, Aden used the stamps of British India.  In 1937, Aden separated from India and became the Colony of Aden, at which time it began issuing its own stamps.

In 1939, a new series was issued that pictured King George VI.  The sultans of the two major states in the Hadhramaut (a part of the Aden Protectorate) opposed these stamps because they were sovereigns of their own and not subjects of the king.  To resolve the issue, the British government issued separate stamps for Kathiri State of Seiyun and Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Mukalla (later Qu'aiti State in Hadhramaut).  The stamps of these two states were valid throughout all of Aden.  Aden and these states continued to issue stamps until 1965, when they were all replaced with the stamps  the Federation of South Arabia and later the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen.
