Own Little-Known Narcotic Stamp

This is your chance to own a seldom-seen US Narcotic Tax stamp.

During the 19th century, the use of narcotics such as opium remained dangerously unregulated.  However, through the work of so-called "muckraking" journalists, the federal government finally took action.  The Harrison Narcotics Tax Act (1915) required patent medicine manufacturers to register and pay a special tax (1¢ per ounce) on compounds containing "opium or coca leaves, their salts, derivatives, or preparations."

Narcotic stamps were created soon after to indicate the tax had been paid.  These stamps were created for drug manufacturers only, making them inaccessible to stamp collectors of the time.  In fact, many collectors have never seen Narcotic stamps before or know they exist!

Own the Last Narcotic Stamp Ever Issued

In 1963, the final issue of Narcotic Tax stamps was printed as a result of a request from Wyeth Laboratories.  The company had recently started marketing a new product called Tubex and needed a stamp to fit the packaging.  The Tubex containers were packed in heavy card stock boxes that were long and narrow.  Each box contained less than 30 milliliters (one ounce) of narcotic, so the 1¢ stamp was all the packages needed.  US #RJA105 was developed to be placed across the top flap of the packaging, similar to Cigarette or Playing Card Tax stamps.

The new stamp was only used by Wyeth Laboratories as it was not a convenient size for other containers.  By 1971, the Narcotic Tax Act was repealed and the stamps became obsolete.  They remain little-known and scarce today.  Order yours now.
