This stamp commemorates the 10th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO is a government alliance originally established to counter the threat of the Soviet-dominated Warsaw Pact (alliance of Eastern European Communist nations).
 
The treaty originally had 12 member nations, and since 1949, has added 16 more. This includes former members of the Warsaw Pact, with some of the new NATO members formerly part of the Soviet Union.
