In 2008, the Wire Mesh Chair was featured on a 42¢ stamp, one of a pane of 16 issued by the U.S. Postal Service to honor the contributions of Charles and Ray Eames to American design.
The Eames wire chair was designed in 1951. It was lightweight and strong, yet comfortable. The seat fit the contours of the human body, and the woven mesh made the chairs durable. It was the first piece of furniture to be awarded an American mechanical patent.
The wire chair sold through Herman Miller and was available with coverings of leather, vinyl, or fabric.
