About the stamp designs:  The stamp pictures an action shot of Buzz Lightyear running.  The artwork was provided by Pixar Animation Studios.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California.

About the Go Beyond set:  Four different stamp designs were issued to coincide with the 2022 release of the movie, Lightyear, starring everyone’s favorite space ranger, Buzz Lightyear.  Each stamp pictures Buzz in a different pose.  All artwork provided by Pixar Animation Studios.  The selvage of the pane of 20 includes a full-body view of Buzz and his iconic green and silver space suit.

History the stamp represents:  In 2022, Disney Pixar released a new film (Lightyear) about the origin story of Buzz Lightyear.  While previous Toy Story movies were about the toy, Lightyear is about the character in a science fiction movie who inspired the toy’s creation.

The concept behind Lightyear was that the main human character of Toy Story, a young boy named Andy Davis, would have seen the film when it came out.  The movie would then inspire Andy and other kids in the Toy Story universe to want a toy just like the Buzz Lightyear character in the movie.  For this reason, Disney Pixar chose Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz instead of Tim Allen, the former voice of the character.

Lightyear was directed by Angus MacLane, who said he was influenced by the character of Buzz Lightyear and always wondered why Andy wanted the toy so badly.  The movie was officially announced on December 2020 as a spin-off of Toy Story.  Animators gave the film a “cinematic and chunky” look to hearken back to older science fiction films like Star Wars.  They did this by researching old filming techniques and combining what they learned with inspiration from visits to NASA.  All these details combined to create a work of art that brought audiences face-to-face with the “real” Buzz Lightyear.  It’s amazing to think how far animation has come since Toy Story in 1995.
