Constitution Bicentennial Cover Highlights End of Confederation Congress

Own this cover marking the bicentennial of the US Constitution, the document that framed America’s government.  It commemorates the date the Congress that had been established by the Articles of Confederation adjourned for the final time.  The Articles had been ratified in March 1781 and laid out a government with a weak Federal government.  By 1787, American leaders realized a new government system had to be put in place and the Constitutional Convention began.  After the Constitution had been ratified by a majority of states, the Congress of the Confederation completed its business and adjourned on October 10, 1788.

The New York, New York, postmark pays tribute to the site of the national government.  The cover features a Bicentennial Era stamp (1545) and a Flag over the Capitol stamp.

This cover is part of a series issued in honor of the Bicentennial of the Constitution.  Begin your collection of these covers today.
