Constitution Bicentennial Cover Highlights the Meeting of the First Congress

Own this cover marking the bicentennial of the US Constitution, the document that framed America’s government.  It commemorates the date, April 6, 1789, when a quorum was met and the US Congress met for the first time.  The original date had been a month before, but weather and poor roads had prevented many new Senators and Representatives from reaching New York.

When Congress was finally able to meet, John Langdon was elected president of the Senate.  The only scheduled business was counting the electoral votes cast by the states.  When the count was completed, Langdon announced that George Washington had been elected unanimously.

The postmark pays tribute to the bicentennial of Congress.  The date is the First Day of Issue of the Constitution Bicentennial: United States Senate stamp (2413).  The other stamp shows the Flag over the Capitol (2116a).

This cover is part of a series issued in honor of the Bicentennial of the Constitution.  Begin your collection of these covers today
