Set also includes 40¢ Philip Mazzei stamp, honoring the Italian-American patriot who promoted American independence through his writings published in America and Europe during the 18th century.  He settled in America, befriended Thomas Jefferson, and contributed to the commerce of the colonies.
Other honorees include Blanche Stuart Scott – the first American woman to fly solo.  After her early flights, she joined a group of pilots on the daredevil circuit and earned the title “The Tomboy of the Air.”  She eventually became a special consultant for the United States Air Force.
