Examined Civil War Prisoners’ Covers

Only four Civil War Examined Prisoners’ Covers with U.S. #65 are available in very good to very fine condition with crisp, clear markings.  Selections vary, with some including original correspondence and/or certificate.  Each is hand stamped “Prisoner’s Letter Examined.”

Each cover is a direct connection to history, complete with its own story.  For example, the cover pictured here was sent July 25, 1864, from Delaware City, Delaware.  Postmark with barred cancel ties the #65 to the envelope, which is addressed to Mrs. Mary F. Bullock of Lexington, Kentucky.  The sender is Mary's husband, Confederate Major Robert Bullock of the 8th Kentucky Calvary and a member of the famous “Morgan’s Raiders.”  Bullock was captured at Buffington Island, Ohio on July 19, 1863, and confined for the remainder of the war.
