CZ153-55 Coil Stamps These three stamps were issued in 1960-62 as coil stamps and were perforated 10 vertically. The images are the same as previously issued stamps. CZ153 – 3¢ Goethals – Like CZ117, this stamp pictures George Washington Goethals. On March 4, 1907, Goethals was appointed by President Roosevelt to be Chairman and Chief Engineer of the Isthmian Canal Commission (I.C.C.). He served in that position until completion of Canal construction in 1914. Goethals then served as Governor of the Panama Canal until his resignation January 17, 1917. CZ154 – 4¢ Administration Building, Balboa Heights – This stamp has the same image as CZ152. Balboa Heights was part of the town of Balboa, the administrative center of the Canal Zone. Both areas were named after Vasco de Balboa, the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. Two towns at the Pacific end of the canal – Old La Boca and New La Boca – were joined as construction debris was deposited in the harbor to build 500 acres of new land. CZ155 – 5¢ Stevens – John F. Stevens replaced John F. Wallace as Chief Engineer. Following his resignation in 1907, Stevens was replaced by G.W. Goethals. Stamp CZ139 has the same image of Stevens
