Celebrate Will and Kate’s Engagement
This mint souvenir sheet commemorates the engagement of Prince William to Catherine Middleton.
In early October 2010, William and Kate went on a vacation to a jungle in the northern rainlands of Kenya known as Ishak Bin. With Kenyan-born farmer and reserve owner Ian Craig as their guide, the young couple spent their first week in tents in the jungle, enjoying the peace and quiet away from their busy lives back in England.
The following week, they went to Craig’s 55,000-acre reserve in northern Kenya, Lewa Downs. While there, William and Kate enjoyed some of the best views of the African savanna (grassland). The workers in Craig’s house were surprised at how friendly the famous couple was. One maid recalled, “William was always smiling and not bossy or royal at all.” The generous prince gave her a $100 tip, which was equal to almost a month of her regular wages.
William and Kate stayed busy; going on game drives to see lions, elephants, and rhinos. They were introduced to the way the reserve operated, and accompanied Craig when he went to tag rhinos. After tagging one of the rhinos, William agreed to personally sponsor its care for £6,000 a year. The rhino was then named William in his honor. To celebrate this, they ate one of their favorite meals of the trip, Masai-style sheep roasted over charcoal.
After several days in the house, the pair returned to the tents for a few more days before flying to Sarara, Kenya, on Craig’s private jet. Accompanied by two friends, they saw giraffes, elephants, wild dogs, and buffalo. From there, the pair went alone to Rutundu Lake, on Mount Kenya. It was in this cabin, on the last day of their vacation, that William proposed. When they returned to Craig’s home, they told him of their engagement, as well as telling the maid and a few other workers. And for one month, they were the only other people who knew about the engagement, long before the Queen or even William’s brother, Harry.
On November 16, 2010, the news of their engagement was made public.
