Mint Stamps Honor Pope Benedict's Visit to Israel
On May 11, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI began a five-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land to promote peace and understanding. During his trip, the Pope visited the Holocaust memorial, shook the hands of six Holocaust survivors and laid a wreath at the memorial, saying, “May the names of these victims never perish. May their suffering never be denied, belittled or forgotten.”
Later that afternoon, the Pope planted a centuries-old olive tree in the Peace Garden of the Presidential residence. He was then presented with a fruit basket from two children – one Christian and one Jewish. The basket had the “Seven Species” of plants named in the Bible and other Israeli produce, including a new type of wheat named Benedict XVI, after the Pope. The Pope also received a very unique gift – the complete text of the Old Testament in Hebrew inscribed on a particle the size of a grain of sand.
The next day, Pope Benedict traveled to the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the holiest place and most visited tourist spot in Israel, where he prayed in silence for several minutes. As part of the custom when visiting the wall, Pope Benedict placed a note in the crack of the wall that said, “God of all the ages, on my visit to Jerusalem, the City of Peace, spiritual home to the Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, I being before you the joys, the hopes and the aspirations, the trials, the suffering and the pain of all your people throughout the world. God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, hear the cry of the afflicted, the fearful, the bereft; send your peace upon this Holy Land, upon the Middle East, upon the entire human family; stir the hearts of all who call upon your name to walk humbly in the path of justice and compassion.”
On the last day of his trip, Pope Benedict visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem’s Old City, the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.
