The tenth addition to the World Heritage Series focused on the nation of Greece and commemorated the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece. Greece was the site of the original Olympic Games in 776 B.C. One of these stamps features Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, the father of the Greek gods.
An architectural masterpiece, the Parthenon in Athens, stands on another stamp in this issue. Built during the Golden Age of Pericles, the Parthenon is at the top of the Acropolis hill. It was dedicated to the patron goddess of Athens, Athena Parthenos.
A tribute to the ancient sites of Mycenae and Tiryns also appears on this issue. Mycenae and Tiryns are linked to the adventurous epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Lion Gate at Mycenae is pictured on the stamp.
The Greek god Apollo was said to have been born on the island of Delos. The stamp design shows a row of creatures from Greek myths standing in the ruins of an ancient city on Delos.
The sites pictured on these stamps were placed on the World Heritage List between 1987 and 1999.
