Priority Mail – American Landmarks
Visitors looking through the tunnel of Vermont’s Bridge on Arlington Green would see the one-time homestead of artist Norman Rockwell. The home was converted from a New England inn built in 1792, and is now a bed and breakfast.
The structure is one of more than 100 covered bridges in Vermont, and also one of the most photographed. It was built in 1852 using architect Ithiel Town’s “lattice truss” design. The result is an 83-foot-long span covered by numerous wooden arches and supported by crisscrossing planks called lattices. It is a rustic beauty that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Renovations occurred in the 1970s and stabilizing wires were added in 1987. After weathering dozens of New England winters, the bridge fared poorly during Hurricane Irene in 2011. Floodwaters swept an uprooted tree into the bridge, leading to its closure. The bridge has since been repaired and reopened.
