2018 50¢ O Beautiful – Bailey Island, Maine
Maine is one of the most popular vacation destinations in America. Millions of people flock to the state’s beautiful coastline every year. Most travel to Portland or Bar Harbor, but there are some spots out of the way of the usual tourist traffic. Thee hidden gems are some of the best places to visit…
Bailey Island is one of several islands in southeastern Maine’s Casco Bay. The island can be reached by ferry from Portland or by driving across the Cribstone Bridge from nearby Orr’s Island. When arriving on Bailey Island, the first things visitors see are the impressive rock cliffs and glistening harbor. The harbor – Mackerel Cove – is full of fish and crustaceans and is often dotted with lobster boats. There is a small beach on the north side of the cove where visitors can swim, picnic, or collect shells. The houses and shops are reminders of a different era and add to the island’s charm.
During the day, Bailey Island is great for kayaking hiking, or bicycle riding. The most impressive place to hike is called the Giant’s Stairs, which provides a great view of the coast, especially at sunrise or sunset. Less than a mile long and not too steep, it is popular with visitors of all ages. The spectacular scenery on this trail and the nostalgia of the rest of Bailey island makes it a great stop on any Maine vacation.
