Constitution Bicentennial Cover Celebrates Publication of "Cato" Essays

Own this cover marking the bicentennial of the US Constitution, the document that framed America’s government. It commemorates the date the first in a series of seven essays was published in the New York Journal.  These were written by George Clinton under the pen name of "Cato."  Clinton, governor of New York, was opposed to ratifying the Constitution because he was concerned about losing power.  In spite of his opposition, New York ratified the Constitution on July 26, 1788.

The New York, New York, postmark pays tribute to the city that was the nation's capital before it was moved to Washington, DC.  The cover features a Independence Hall stamp (#1044) and a Flag Over the Capitol stamp.
