After spending 28 years in jail for his opposition to apartheid, Nelson Mandela was released in February 1990. That June, he embarked on a world tour and selected New York City as his first stop. He chose New York because the city’s government had vocally opposed apartheid and taken measures to cease operations with South African businesses.
Mandela arrived in New York on June 20, 1990, greeted by tens of thousands of people as he traveled from the airport to Manhattan, where he received a ticker-tape parade. New York’s mayor also presented Mandela with a key to the city, calling it “the key to freedom. It represents the power of the people of this city pushing against doors that have been slammed shut far too long now.” Mandela spent three days in New York, visiting schools, the UN, churches, and speaking before a sold-out crowd at Yankee Stadium.
